Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth Exhibit at the Fowler Museum

Today I went and saw artist Nick Cave’s (not to be confused with the musician from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) exhibit at the Fowler Museum (on the campus of UCLA) called Meet Me at the Center of the Earth. The exhibit featured 35 of his wearable mixed-media sculptures called “soundsuits”.  They are called “soundsuits” because when they are worn, they can be manipulated to make sounds. This video explains it better:

When you first enter the exhibit you are greeted by a 10-ft tall bear suit made of various fabrics and a video of the suits being worn and making sounds. As you go through the exhibit the colorful wearable suits tower over you. Some are made of buttons and fabrics, while others are more like art pieces; and then there are some that are made with real human hair that has been dyed in patterns. There seemed to be a strong African-tribal influence in the work mixed with a modern sense of theater. It kind of reminded me of some of the creatures that show up in a Guillermo Del Toro film (Pan’s Labryinth, Hell Boy II), just more colorful. It would have been cool if there was someone there actually wearing a suit and doing a demonstration, but there wasn’t. Either way, it was an interesting and cool exhibit that I recommend checking out. The exhibit is free and runs through the end of May, click here for more info.
