LYRIC IDEA #7

I haven’t posted any lyric ideas lately; I have been writing music here and there, just haven’t gotten around to posting any of it. This is a new one I’ve been working on, it has a little bit of a folk punk vibe.

(verse)
when we were kids, the things we loved the most
the things we held dear
now nothing to us, and nothing from us
just memories of another year
(chorus)
we sit up all night
drinking wine
and whining about our fears
another year passes us by
we wonder how we got here
(verse)
i’m poised for something great
ready to make my big escape
ready to show them all I’ve got
but in my reflection
I see my deflections
proof of everything i’m not
(chorus)
we sit up all night
drinking wine
and whining about our fears
another year passes us by
we wonder how we got here
(bridge)
I want to make a change
but no one ever taught me how
how to fulfill my dreams, or even what that means
so till then i’ll just hang around
(verse)
when times moving fast
we think of the past
wishing for it to stay
but my memory fades, and time drifts away
into a new day

Here is another little reggae number I’m working on. The lyrics are still kind of rough.

Rebel, Rebel with your gun in hand
Causing lots of trouble in your promise land
Do you think your people really understand?
Rebel, Rebel with your gun in hand

Solider, Solider with your gun in hand
Going to bring peace to the promise land
Chase down the rebels, killing some Taliban
Solider, Solider with your gun in hand

lay your arms down, then your war could be won
lay your arms down, child your war is won (2x)

Rebel, Rebel lay down your gun
This is no way for your war to be won
Killing lots of people under the Afghan sun
Rebel, Rebel lay down your gun

Solider, Solider bringing out your gun
Going to make war under the Afghan sun
Show the enemy how the world is run
Solider, Solider bringing out your gun

lay your arms down, then your war will be won
lay your arms down, child your war is won (2x)

Rebel, Rebel please understand
Can’t change the world with a gun in your hand
You need to do right by the people of your land
Rebel, Rebel please understand

Solider, Solider please understand
Can’t achieve peace with that gun in your hand
Win the people over with a solid plan
Solider, Solider please understand

lay your arms down, then your war will be won
lay your arms down, child your war is won (2x)

Packed my bags, hoped on a train, and headed west
Searching for that new frontier, just like all the rest
Left behind all the things I thought I loved
To make a new life in that California sun
But all I found was a dead end job and broken dreams
Lonely nights in bars without my girl to comfort me
There is no going back, so I guess I'll be moving on
Just looking for that one who won't do me wrong

Maybe I'll find a place to rest my weary head
In the comfort of a strangers bed (2x)

So I headed South in search of Aztec gold
Looking for the promised land in the heart of Mexico
But all I found was fabled stories of dusty bones
With an empty bottle, I end up all alone

Maybe I'll find a place to rest my weary head
In the comfort of a strangers bed (2x)

These places all seem the same to me
Nobody here to set me free
No one around to collect these dusty bones
Don't know if I'll be coming home

So I headed North, ended up in NYC
Those big city lights calling out to me
Now I'm talking New York Blues, gonna give it all my dreams
But all I'm searching for is someone who loves me

Maybe I'll find a place to rest my weary head
In the comfort of a strangers bed (2x)

Here is a little dub song I’m working on, it’s not complete. It is pretty simple, reminds of some of the stuff we used to write back in the day:

once, twice, three times is too many
tried to change the world, but the world just came up empty
once, twice, three times is too many
tried to show you love, but you just come up empty

tried to show you love, tried to show I cared
tried to make a difference, so much tragedy everywhere
in a world of love, filled with so much hate
search for inspiration, each and every day
but it's hard to be inspired, so much violence everywhere
poverty and destruction, people living in despair

once, twice, three times is too many
tried to change the world, but the world just came up empty
once, twice, three times is too many
tried to show you love, but you just come up empty

when I close my eyes, I see it in my dreams
just as I start moving on, it comes calling back to me
how can I do nothing with these thoughts rattling in my head?
time to stand up and make a difference, this is what I said:
you can live your life, waiting for things to change
but until we learn to love each other, things will stay the
same
continue teaching hate, ignorance for the blind
or overcome our differences, we are all the same inside

once, twice, three times is too many
tried to change the world, but the world just came up empty
once, twice, three times is too many
tried to show you love, but you just come up empty

Our Heroes Changed the World

Of the songs I wrote for my old band Reinventing the Wheel, these are the lyrics that have stuck with me all these years:

Chorus: “if music is my soul / my mouth must be a radio, a radio / give me something to call my own / if music is my soul / then my mouth is a radio

Breakdown: “my heroes changed the world with music / who says we can’t too?

Those were from a song called Broadcast Transmissions. There are more lyrics to the song, but I honestly can’t remember them. Maybe I will search around and try to dig up the rest.

I have been writing some music lately. I don’t think it is particularly good, but it is helping to get the creative juices flowing. Anyway, I like posting the words here in one concise place instead of having them on a bunch of little pieces of scratch paper.
Capo on 2, in C

So I got a fortune
Said you’re coming back
Unfortunately,
I kind of doubt that
So I’ll play the cards I’m dealt
Till I get a better hand
Next time I won’t be so quick
To put it all in

Then I could be happy
I’d be happy
I’d happy without you

So I’ll give it all up
The booze, the drinkin’
The screwing around
Stop feelin’
Sorry for myself
For the things I don’t have
The things I can’t get back
The reasons that I’m sad

Then I could be happy
I’d be happy
I’d be happy without you

So you’ve moved on
To better things
I’ll wish you well
To better days
Well I hope he treats you right
Does the things I couldn’t do
I hope you were right
That I would be happier without you

Then I could be happy
I’d be happy
I’d happy without you

So I’ll write another song
Of lost love and time
Just to let you know
You’re still on my mind

…. but I’ll be fine

In the key of G

Whose going to take your glasses off

When you fall asleep with the lights on?

Whose going to take your glasses off tonight?

Somewhere across the sea

There is a boy that longs, longs to be

In your arms tonight

Its okay, its alright

I know you’ve gone away

You’re gone, but I’ll keep sing this old song

Its okay, its alright

Even though you have gone

Just remember, I was here all along

Whose going to tell you it will be alright

When you wake up from a bad dream at night?

Whose going to tell you it will be alright?

One day you will surely see,

All this boy longed to be

Was in your heart tonight

Its okay, its alright

I know you’ve gone away

You’re gone, but I’ll keep sing this old song

Its okay, its alright

Even though you have gone

Just remember, I was here all along
